Slippery Elm Bark (Ulmus rubra) is a species of elm that is native to North America. The inner bark of the slippery elm tree is the part that is used in a variety of traditional medicines.
The demulcent properties of slippery elm bark make it excellent for treatment of sore throats, coughs, and for soothing stomach and intestinal problems.
Dried slippery elm bark can be mixed with hot water to make a tea, or it can be added to smoothies or juices. To make a tea that is soothing to the digestive tract, slippery elm is commonly mixed with licorice root. The powder can be taken in capsule form or mixed with a small amount of warm water and used topically as an emollient poultice.
