As we shift the vibe of the shop and especially the clothing line—think “urban alternative” and “eco-fashion”—you’ll see more and more unique styles making their way to the shelves.
This week we received our first batch of clothing from Nomads Hemp Wear, a Canadian-based company dedicated to eco-friendly, fair trade, durable fabrics and comfortable yet extremely stylish designs.
Louis Seguin and Anik Descoteaux, owners of Nomads, are pioneers of the movement towards hemp and organic eco-clothing. They started their business in 2000 from the back of a VW van, sewing each product from the living rooms of friends, and selling their clothes as they travelled.

At the time, hemp fabric was stiff and hard, and they sought out manufacturers who could work with them to make a softer, comfortable hemp fabric that suited their urban/tribal styles. They succeeded. In line with their values for sustainable living, Louis and Anik use only organic, soft yet strong fabrics—blends of soy, bamboo, cotton, and hemp. These green fibres are the way of the future as they are the most eco-friendly.

Nomads has been so successful that it’s now an international company with retailers across the globe. They continue to operate their business with a distinctly grassroots, personal vibe and commitment to living in harmony with Gaia and the communities around them.
